Day One Mile One

I spent the majority of the day doing the approach trail up Amicalola Falls and since the weather was a beautiful 54 degrees and sunny my Mom joined me for the 1 mile stair climb from the base of the falls up to the lodge. I am lucky to have family willing to make the drive from the lodge up to the parking lot one mile after the Springer Mountain so I got the luxury of doing the approach trail with a day pack and one last night in a real bed before I head out for good. It also gave my parents a chance to test my GPS tracker (Garmin inReach) which gave them a bit of piece of mind. With the light load I was able to make really good time reaching Springer summit at around 2:30, about 3 hours after passing the lodge. I have a feeling I’ll be taking it much slower tomorrow, but that is one of the things I’m looking forward to on this trip. I have no timeline, and no itinerary. I can hike until I’m tired, take my time and enjoy the journey instead of rushing towards a destination. In the end, the journey is the good part.
