Night One – Hawk Mountain Campsite
A tree must have fallen down in the distance because there was a super loud wood cracking noise followed by a big crash. This is honestly a bigger fear of mine than any of the wildlife. There is a military (army I think) base near by and they must have been running drills because there was a ton of gunfire for a short while. Living in Coronado I’m pretty used to that.
I need to pay more attention to how far away water is because the spring for this camp site is a trek and my camp shoes are completely worthless and my feet slide everywhere in them. Time will tell but I may be ditching some of my clothes and winter gear pretty quickly. I have micro spikes that weigh 11ounces and a steel nalgene that is great for keeping me warm at night with boiling water, but is really heavy. Same goes for the extra pair of sleeping pants. It would have to be blowing and snowy to make that necessary. I also think I’ll be sending home the journal and just using my phone instead. As much as I typically hate typing on a phone it is far easier when you are laying in a hammock. So that would be close to 3 pounds
I didn’t get as far as I thought I would today. I don’t really have mileage goals, but I did have somewhat unrealistic expectations. I had wanted to make the most of the nice weather and go farther today and slower tomorrow and the next day. But I’m seriously going to have to wait for my body to get in better shape than it is now. Otherwise I suspect this will all end in an injury.
There are only a few people I’ve run into so far. A girl and her dog and a another guy who must have camped further towards the water.
